Sally Van Meter has a Weissenborn Style 1, a Kona Style 4, and a Hilo Model 640. She uses phosphor bronze strings with gauges of .014 ("maybe a .015 or .016 on the Weissenborn, depending on the tuning," she says), .016, .026, .036, .046, and .056. She plays in open D (D A D F# A D) but says, "My Weissenborn seems to have a preference for Eb [Eb Bb Eb G Bb Eb]." She also experiments with modal tunings and high G: G D G B D G.

Over the last twenty-five years, Sally's slide guitar work has gone on to include musical collaborations with well-known artists that include performances and recordings with David Grisman and the late great Jerry Garcia, Tony Rice, Chris Hillman, Jerry Douglas, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Alison Brown, Taj Mahal, Peter Rowan & the Rowan Brothers, Claire Lynch, Laurie Lewis, Russ Barenberg, Kathy Kallick, the Nashville Bluegrass Band, Gerry O'Beirne, Maura O'Connell and the inimitable Leftover Salmon.

On the Sugar Hill label, Sally has a solo album entitled All In Good Time, (produced by Jerry Douglas ) that was a finalist nominee for the IBMA Instrumental Album of the Year. Sally's other Sugar Hill recording, The Great Dobro Sessions (produced by Jerry Douglas & Tut Taylor ) earned her a 1994 GRAMMY AWARD for the Best Bluegrass Recording from NARAS as a featured performer. Her film , television and radio credits include the film Gather At the River, featuring Peter Rowan & the Nashville Bluegrass Band, and nationally televised features such as, CBS' Northern Exposure and TNN's Texas Connection. Sally has also been invited to perform for nationally acclaimed NPR show A Prairie Home Companion, and Nick Forster's popular NPR radio show, E-Town.

In 1995, Sally was invited to record with David Grisman and Jerry Garcia for a special project, entitled The Songs of Jimmie Rodgers-A Tribute produced by Bob Dylan for Columbia Records. From 1977 through 1996, Sally was a member of the Good Ol' Persons, a much-beloved band based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has been an IBMA Finalist Nominee for Dobro Player of the Year from 1990-1997 and in 1996 won two IBMA awards for Best Instrumental Recording and Recorded Event of the Year, (The Great Dobro Sessions). Sally's musical journeys have brought her to the United Kingdom and Europe and Japan.

These days Sally resides professionally in Colorado and is having fun wearing the Producers Hat, producing recordings for national touring acts including The Yonder Mountain String Band and the Open Road Bluegrass Band. Along with performing, Sally's love of teaching music has led her to being a mainstay at music workshops & camps throughout the US/UK and Europe.
